Sprint to Raise Smartphone Fees

T-Mobile-USASprint Nextel Corp has plans to up their smartphone service fees by $10 a month. The move will bring Sprint’s prices closer to those of its rivals Verizon Wireless and AT&T.

Steve Clement, a Pacific Crest analyst believes the change will give T-Mobile a boost. “When you have the most aggressive pricier go out and raise prices that’s good for everybody,” he explained. “T-Mobile USA had been viewed as the valued leader, but they have lost some of that ground to Sprint. This potentially opens the door for them a bit.”

The new $79.99 fee is to include 450 minutes, unlimited mobile-to-mobile minutes and unlimited texts and use of data services like the internet. Verizon has a similar plan for $110 dollars.

History Channel Refuses to Air Propaganda Kennedy Documentary

KennedysBrave New Films tried to stop the creation of a new miniseries about President Kennedy even before it went into production after the script was submitted for perusal to leading historians such as Ted Sorensen and Thurston Clarke. These scholars said that the proposed miniseries was chock full of unmitigated distortions of the truth.

Despite the disapproval, the film was made, starring Greg Kinnear and Katie Holmes in the roles of John and Jacqueline Kennedy. The History Channel however, has made a decision not to allow it to be broadcast, thus protecting its own reputation and the history of the Kennedy legacy, and even the idea of what history is itself.

NASA Supports Robotics Competition

NASA-MooncarNASA was one of the primary sponsors of a robotics competition which aimed to develop the next generation of technological leaders. NASA teamed up with For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) to launch the event. Around 2,000 teams participated in the contest this year.

FIRST’s goal is to generate interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This competition gave high school students the opportunity to design, build, test and complete a robot that can answer to particular requests.

NASA ensures public access to robotic programs in order to encourage youth to investigate careers in science and engineering. It also provides grants for 297 teams and sponsors four student competitions in the area.

Tragedy in Tucson Also Wounds Press

Gabrielle-GiffordsThere is but one basic rule in journalism that must not be broken at all costs: ‘Get the story right!’ Unfortunately not only did the horrific events of last weekend in Tucson leave several people wounded and killed, the media itself hurt badly as it fell a few more notches in credibility and believability in the eyes of the public.

Among the media outlet casualties were no less than National Public Radio, CNN, and Fox News, who reported the following incorrect information: “U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot in the head and killed outside a grocery store in Tucson while holding a public event, Arizona Public Media reported Saturday,” was NPR’s interpretation of events. Of course now we know Representative Gifford was not killed.

Martin Savidge of CNN incorrectly stated that “several people have been shot at a grocery store” when the truth was they were fired upon on a street corner.
Shephard Smith of Fox News told his listeners that Tucson police “are actively pursuing a white man in his 50s. He is not now believed to have acted alone.” We now know that the shooter was a deranged young man in his twenties definitely acting alone.

In some cases the correct information arrived a few minutes later, and in other cases hours later. Apologies from the various media outlets began to pour in, but it would have been better to hear either statements like “unconfirmed reports say,” or “details are not yet available”, rather than the fabulously incorrect information which was broadcast. The credibility of a free press is a precious commodity which should not be toyed with.

Ferrari Developing Mind-Reading Car

FerrariFerrari plans to install a new technology which can evaluate a driver’s mental state, and adjust the car’s stability and power-control systems accordingly.

“Drivers tend to miscalculate- in particular, overestimate- their driving skill, and, more importantly, their psychophysical condition, with the result that driver-selected dynamic vehicle performance simply reflects the driver’s wish, as opposed to the driver’s actual psychophysical condition and proficiency,” Ferrari said in their application. The applications show Ferraris plans to have numerous sensors provide the cars with data on the driver and adjust its functionality to suit. “The biometric sensors may comprise a piezoelectric measuring device for measuring the driver’s respiration, a device for measuring the driver’s blood pressure and heart rate, a television camera for monitoring the driver’s eyes (blink rate) to determine the driver’s alertness, a device for monitoring the electric activity of the driver’s brain, a device for recording the driver’s surface temperature and a device for recording the conductivity of the driver’s skin (to determine the degree of perspiration),” the application continued.

Ferrari concluded that “dynamic performance may be modified to enhance driving safety in the case of a tired or unresponsive driver, and also enhance driving pleasure and/or performance in the case of an alert, responsive driver.”

Over 8 Million Xbox Kinects Sold in 60 Days

The Xbox Kinect’s success exceeded even Microsoft Corp’s expectations. In the first sixty days following the launch, over 8 million of the game systems were sold, flying past the company’s original goal of 5 million.

The competing ‘Move’ sold 4.1 million units in its first two months. The device, created by Sony Corp, is similar to the Kinect in that it tracks the body movements of the player. ‘Move,’ however, is a wand-like device that users must hold in order to control the on-screen game.  This device costs fifty dollars for the controller, or $400 with a PlayStation 3.

The Kinect is being sold for $150, or $300 with a 4GB Xbox console. Gamers using a Kinect unit do not need to hold anything, as their movements are translated directly by the device.

Chinese Technology May Solve Uranium Shortage Issue

China is one of the world’s largest energy consumers. They have found a way to give back by possibly beginning a technological revolution. They are developing a new technology which can reprocess spent nuclear fuel and is able to extend uranium’s usage by at least sixty times. This breakthrough may solve the problem of its short supply.

The technology was developed by the No. 404 factory under the CNNC. With use of the new tool, the country’s current detected uranium resources can last for 3,000 years, according to China Central Television.

“We’re among the few countries that can implement the recycling of nuclear fuel. As such, we, to some extent, lead the world in this field,” said Sun Qin, general manager of CNNC. Lin Boqiang, director of the China Center for Energy Economics Research, said “China has invested heavily in uranium exploration know-how and recycling technology to meet the nation’s burgeoning needs and increase the ratio of nuclear energy in the total energy consumption mix.” He added that the technology and recycling are both at a very early stage.
