Sirius XM Signed With Howard Stern

Howard-Stern

The feisty radio host Howard Stern has come to an agreement with Sirius XM radio to continue to jockey for them until December 31st, 2015. Known to many as the ‘shock-jock,’ Stern has been known to swear while on the air and often discusses subjects with decidedly adult content. He has been forced to pay fines for some of his more vulgar behavior.

For the first time Stern will be available to mobile listeners, which should help boast the already large number of fans. Analysts have estimated that Stern attracted 1.2 million new subscribers to Sirius XM when he came aboard, helping them reach about 20 million listeners today.

Due to expire this month, the previous 5 year contract was worth $500 million. The details of the contract have not been released, but Lazard Capital Markets analyst Barton Crockett guesses that Stern will get $80 million each year in cash, the same as his present salary, but does not include $100 million in stock over five years which was part of his expiring contract.

Cabrillo College Begins Construction of Green Technology Center

greenCommunity representatives and leaders gathered at Green technology Center of Watsonville, California, to celebrate the beginning of the construction of the college’s newest facility, the Green Technology Center. The center is “designed to prepare students for industrial jobs, initially in green construction and energy management.” The center has a $6 million budget.

The Green technology Center is expected to open for students in 2012. It consists of two buildings, with 14,000 square feet of space. The project has the support of Michael Watkins, the county’s superintendent of schools, as well as that of Daniel Dodge, the Watsonville Mayor. “Here in Watsonville, where a third of the population is under 18 and we’ve seen unemployment reach 30% in the past year, the need for jobs is undeniable,” Dodge said.

What Does it Mean to Be a Facebook Friend? (Part III)

Teachers are proceeding with caution when it comes to becoming Facebook friends with their students. Although some analysts believe that teachers should get involved in the world of social media, they should be very hesitant to use these sites to communicate with their students.

Because the social media interactions are highly personal having a Facebook relationship is very different from the student-teacher classroom relationship. As one adviser explained, “It’s a question of maintaining an appropriate teacher-student relationship and respecting those boundaries.” This adviser does not think it is appropriate for teachers to interact with their students on social media sites.

Since Facebook friends are meant to be your peers, family or friends, teachers just do not fit into those categories.

On the other hand, if the teachers want to remain relevant to their students, as people that they can relate to on several levels, teachers should not shun the social media craze.

Steve Dotto, former host of the “Dotto Tech TV Show” explains, “Teachers and all adults have to be part of the social networking world and understand it. If the adults in society aren’t there, we can’t help our kids through it.”

This adviser is quick to point out, however, that he does not mean that students and teachers should become Facebook friends. It would not be correct for students to see personal photos of their teachers up on Facebook, or even worse, the development of extremely inappropriate relationships between students and teachers as a result of their Facebook friendship.

See More Media Genetically Modifying Trees?

An American organization called the Institute of Forest Biotechnology has started a great number of discussions regarding genetically modified trees. By altering the trees’ DNA patterns, people will be able to create trees that are stronger, more fruitful, and more resistant to diseases, insects and changes in climate. Members of the organization believe that the modification of trees could lead to better, stronger lumber and alternative fuel sources, as well as aid the environment in general, as trees absorb carbon and provide habitats for wildlife.

Steven Strauss, a professor of forest biotechnology at Oregon State University, stated that “biotech trees, in my view, are a very powerful tool. It’s something that we’d like to have available, but it’s something that we’d like to use properly.”
Other environmentalist organizations have a more cautious approach to the idea. “We think there’s been a tendency to introduce these things before they have actually identified all the potential problems,” said John Bennet, the executive director of the Sierra Club of Canada.

New Technology May Lower Avalanche Risks

AvalancheAvalanches are especially deadly, and can occur with no warning. Researchers from the University of Calgary are digging into the snowpack to discover more about the cause of the slides. Dr. Bruce Jamieson, a researcher for Avalanche Risk Control, described an especially dangerous type of avalanche; “An entire plate of snow- it could be a meter deep or more at the snow surface and sometimes that slab is sitting on a melt-freeze crust.” He explained that if the bond between the layer of new snow and the layer of frozen crust beneath it is weak, there is a potential for this type of avalanche, which is one that is very difficult to predict.

Experts from the Applied Snow and Avalanche Research Group have found that the infrared technology in cameras can measure the temperature in different layers of snowpack, which can aid in discerning areas that are in danger of these slides; the greater the difference in temperature- the greater the danger. “We actually go out to these deep slab avalanches all over western Canada. We’re chasing them and doing lots of manual observations,” a researcher explained. Another added that the technology “will help improve the accuracy and relevance of bulletins and that will reduce avalanche fatalities.”

Facebook Challenges Past Relationship Configurations (Part II)

Should students and their teachers become Facebook friends? This is an interesting issue which brings to question many assumptions about the role that teachers play in the lives of their students, which is worth exploring. Not so long ago teachers were authority figures who demanded respect, if not awe, for their superior knowledge and place in society. The teacher under the best of circumstances was not just the bearer and deliverer of wisdom, but was also someone to strive to be like, to emulate.

This explains why students always used to feel uncomfortable when accidentally meeting one of their teachers in the shopping mall or a restaurant. Teachers were beyond the mundane everyday activities which we all participated in with our families and friends. Of course, we knew this wasn’t true, but the society we lived in encouraged the façade in order to raise our teachers up onto a new plane of living.

NASA Successfully Launches New Solar Sail

SatelliteA folded solar sail was ejected from a small NASA satellite on Monday, demonstrating a significant success in NASA’s attempts to develop and install solar-sail technology. The ejected device is called NanoSail-D, and is approximately the size of a loaf of bread. It was launched by a FASTSAT satellite.

The 100-square foot sail attached to NanoSail-D is expected to unfurl within the next few days. If the sail is a success, NASA hopes to use this newly developed technology to bring old satellites down from Earth’s orbit without wasting expensive propellant. The sail is meant to use solar radiation as “wind,” which will get caught in the solar sail and propel the spacecraft effortlessly. It is made out of a polymer material which is thinner than human hair.

Dean Alhorn, NanoSail-D principal investigator as well as aerospace engineer said that “this is a great step for our solar sail team with the successful ejection of the NanoSail-D satellite from FASTSAT.”

Social Media Creates New Issues for Student/Teacher Relations (Part I)

social-mediaThe incredible revolution caused by the computer and the internet is raising issues of what are appropriate and not appropriate behaviors on-line. For instance, Facebook has recently exploded with users, and those on Facebook are being forced to makes social choices which will determine what acceptable social media behavior will be in the future. This is entirely different than the way societal norms develop in the world of human, face-to-face interactions, which are learned over time from parents, teachers and peers. Of course manners and what are acceptable behavior changes with each new generation, but the evolution is usually slower and more natural. Today adults as well as youth are being on a sharp learning curve and must come to grapple with what to do.

One issue now being worked out is whether students should become Facebook friends with their teachers. There are some interesting issues here that we will explore in part II of this series.
