iPhone Widgets: Sync.ME

iPhone-widgetSync.ME has a new feature – the iPhone “Widgets” link.  This facilitates sharing content as well as speedier access to social network profiles.  This iPhone widget can be used to capture a business card through the camera, take a note, add a calendar reminder and more.  As well the iPhone widget can be used to quickly share things over iMessage/SMS.  The app uses Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) differently to enable one to automatically put a URL into a custom field for contact cards, thereafter opening the iPhone widgets section for Sync.ME contact.

This has received criticism as being complicated but the iPhone widget developer says it is not the case.  However, according to one reviewer, jlword. “its not as seamless and efficient as Microsoft’s implementation though. Seems they are even implementing a ‘Me’ card. Sounds shamelessly similar the Windows Phone ‘Me’ Tile where you can post to your wall, see notifications, check in and set chat status. In the Peoples Hub Windows Phone automatically updates contacts image, demographic info, you can view friends latest posts, read comments, share comments to posts, view Facebook pictures of contact, comment on pictures, view tags on photos, tag photos, write on a friends facebook wall, chat via Facebook and more right from the Peoples Hub (Windows Phone Contacts) without launching separate apps.”

Gadgets and Gizmos Taking a New Direction

iPhoneNew gadgets and gizmos usually become more technical, but now it seems that they could be taking a turn in the opposite direction.  If the rumors about a new Apple product are correct, gadgets and gizmos could be becoming, well, less hi-tech.  It has been suggested that Apple may be launching an iPhone with a difference – a cheap, plastic one.

One reason for the possible launch is that it is believed that it is time for the company to develop a phone that is not so expensive.  This way, a greater amount of people will be able to benefit from Apple technology.  If this plastic phone does come onto the market, it is likely to coincide with the 5S that is due out in the fall.  So for those who want to budget, rather than purchase a previous generation iPhone, could buy the plastic one and benefit from the same screen size and lighting connector and the older phones will be phased out.

Truth is, others are asking the sensible question of “what more can we get?” from an iPhone.  It seems that it has everything so what is the appeal of a newer model.  According to CNET’s Scott Stein the only thing lacking from this smartphone is battery life. “My wife,” he reports “does one thing with her iPhone more than anything else: she charges it.”  So if the only addition on the new iPhone is an extended battery life, the appeal of the plastic cheaper iPhone launched at the same time could really be quite extensive.

So it could just be that the coolest gadgets and gizmos are taking a step back to basics.  Who knows?  Maybe the future of the hi-tech world is going to be lower-tech as we move into 2014.

Tech Gadgets for the Elderly

ElderlyIt used to be that it was the youngsters who were addicted to tech gadgets.  But now, thanks to Iggy Fanlo, this is about to change.  Co-founder of Lively – a wireless technology for the elderly and their caregivers – Fanlo points out that tech gadgets are now set to become a key item in the lives of seniors too.  Rather than learning how to benefit from an iPhone, seniors can take advantage from in-home monitoring sensors; accessing medical treatment from home and all sorts of other things to make living at home much more manageable.

Developing tech gadgets for the elderly is also likely to be quite a fruitful business.  According to director for the Center for Technology and Aging, David Lindeman, developing these useful devices for the elderly he believes “will have the broadest and longest-lasting social impact.”  Indeed, within less than two decades, a fifth of the American population will be 65 and older.  More will live longer and more independently in their summer years than any time to date.  In addition, given that the national average age of nursing home entrance is closer to 90 these days than 80, tech gadgets to be used at home are becoming increasingly attractive.  The more such tech gadgets that are created to help seniors, the easier life will be on their caregivers.

With Lively, one’s movements can be tracked using wireless sensors that are placed throughout the house – pill box, bathroom door etc. – so that if someone is in the bathroom too long or not taking enough medication, it is tracked and reported.  Basically one’s regular routine is determined and then if something seems out-of-the-ordinary – it is tracked and family /caregivers is alerted.  Such tech gadgets are a huge relief to those who felt trapped in the home caring for someone and for the person being cared for to re-develop their independence.

iPhone Widgets?

widgetsIt seems that the new iPhone – the iPhone 6 – is finally going to be featuring widgets.  Up until now iPhone widgets haven’t been in the picture and these smartphones have been widget-less as it were.   Now though things are about to change and iPhone widgets are going to be something of the future.  In addition, it is anticipated that the new iPhone will come with an edge-to-edge display and be twice as fast as the Galaxy S4.   What has been exciting for widget and iPhone lovers is that the new model will come with fully-functional potential for iPhone widgets.

What has been happening is that there has been a significant overhaul on Apple’s iOS 7.  This has resulted in the potential for iPhone widgets on both the 6 model and the 5S, to be found on the smartphone’s home screen.   The concept was developed by SimplyZesty to make iPhone widgets a possibility.  The redesigned iOS is compatible with Jony Ive’s vision – Chief Designer at Apple – who bases his designs on being as “uncluttered” and “flat” as possible.

It seems that for a long while, iPhone widgets have been on the wishlist of Apple fans.  But once the iOS 7 is unveiled, this dream will become a reality.

Braven BRV-1

action-sportsFor action-sports fanatics, the Braven BRV-1 does not disappoint.  It gives its users up to 12 hours of music that can be enjoyed in practically any outdoor environment (including rafting rapids or skating in parks).  Boasting an IPX5 certified water resistant, shock absorbency, and Bluetooth compatibility, this ultra-lightweight device comes in a compact design.  But, its small-sized speaker should not deceive the user since it can rock any environment all night long!  The Braven BRV-1 is also able to stand up to water splashes (but don’t take it swimming) and other tough environments given its rubber protective case.  Another feature that has gained it popularity is the capacity to apply a bit of extra pressure to the volume buttons which results in the track skipping back or forwards that makes it easier to use for one not holding the handset in each arm.

Power on and power off emit different tones and the LED light on the front of the speaker shows when it’s been ignited. Ultimately, given all these features and more the Braven BRV-1 is fabulous for playing music and has an impressive audio system using its two 1-9/16″ full-range drivers.

Exposure Band

One way to avoid skin cancer is to monitor the amount of sunscreen one applies.  But it is often not so easy to remember to keep reapplying throughout the day.  Now however, thanks to a new special bracelet invention made by two teenagers, this is no longer a problem.  17-year old Danielle Watt and Sarah Mount have created a bracelet with a sensor which changes color when one needs to apply additional sunscreen. The girls were inspired to create this, since they both know people with skin cancer.  It is thus now their hope that the bracelet will prevent others from going through the same ordeal.

The Exposure Band has a UV monitoring face that, because of UV reactive materials, changes from white to bright yellow to alert the user when additional sunscreen need be applied.  Made from soft plastic with a resin face, it comes in seven colors and is suitable for both children and adults.

Outlet Speaker

The Outlet Speaker – manufactured by bēm wireless – was recently released.  This extremely powerful mobile Bluetooth speaker can plug directly into any outlet.  Since it is very small (company marketers liken it to that of a juice box), it only adds to any décor as opposed to subtracting from it.  Despite its minimalism, this does not take away from its capacity to deliver crystal clear sound.  As company Marketing and Product Development Director, Bryan Katzel explains, “our thought behind the outlet speaker is to enhance the consumer’s everyday life. We believe big sound doesn’t necessarily need to come from a big speaker. The beauty behind the outlet speaker is in its simplicity. Plug it in while cooking dinner without taking up any counter space, stick it in an outlet behind your desk at work to hear your favorite tunes to spark your creativity, or tuck it behind the living room couch to fill your home with great music.”

The Outlet Speaker comprises: wireless range up to 25 feet; built-in USB port; Aux In and Aux Out and retails at $99.99.
