Back to School with the Powerbag

Kids who are going back to school might not necessarily be interested in shopping for a regular backpack ahead of time.  That seems passé. What is in though these days is the Powerbag.  Since around 70 percent of students today no longer need huge orthopedic backpacks filled with stacks of heavy books, a different kind of bag is needed. Students are much more likely to need a bag that is appropriate for their laptops, tablets and smartphones.  In other words, a bag with a built-in battery system, such as the Powerbag.  With this built-in system, one can easily charge their devices anywhere, anytime.  Right now it doesn’t have the capacity to charge laptops, but it does have a compartment through which to carefully stow one.  They are able to charge up to four devices at once through the fūl charging system.  Cables for micro- and mini-USB devices; an Apple connector an a USB port for any other USB-powered device are included.  They can be purchased for $140+ with a choice of five different styles.  Select either 3000 mAh or 6000 mAh batteries.

The Fūl system automatically senses which devices are plugged in and will send even amounts of power to each device, ensuring everything gets its fair share of juice. To charge the bag, you simply plug it into the wall. While there have been batteries in bags until now, the Powerbag is extremely thin and light and thus much more appealing to those looking for these kind of bags.

MacBook Pro with Retina Display

Apple’s new MacBook Pro with Retina Display is really the dream laptop of any Mac lover.  Boasting 5 million pixels in a 15.4” display and 2880 by 1800 resolution, individual pixels can’t even be discerned the density is so high.  There is less glare without compromising on color and quality.  Indeed, there is a 29 percent higher contrast ration than a standard MacBook Pro display; everything is just richer and the technology provides for a 178-degree view of everything on the screen.

In order to benefit most from this Retina Display, much of the software has been updated.  As well, the design is solid but its body only measures .71 inches, weighing a mere 4.5 pounds, albeit wider and taller than the Air.

It really is ultimately all about the display with the MacBook Pro.  If aesthetics is your thing, you might want to look into making the purchase…it’s something you’re unlikely to regret.

Mice Ward Off Sweaty Palms

For anyone who has ever felt that their hands were getting too sweaty from using their computer mouse too long, they will love the USB OptiWind Mouse. Priced at $22 and manufactured by Brando, this mouse that comes with a built-in cooling fan emits a soft breeze that reduces palm sweating through its 28 CFM airflow, rotating at approximately 1500 rpm. Fitted with a whole slew of ventilation holes, when ignited the inside fan can be seen running and a slight and a low audible hum can be heard. Other than that, it is known as being “as quiet as a mouse.” In addition, the fan can work for around 20,000 hours at a time.

The USB OptiWind Mouse has an on/off switch so the fan can be powered down when one’s hands are no longer sweaty and on, when they are.  While at first sight it looks like any other product of its genre, when one sees the cooling fan, one realizes it is quite different.  It has an 800 dpi optical sensor connected to a host computer through a 1.2 meter USB 2.0 cable.  It can be used with most operating systems including here Windows 98/ME/2000/XP.

Flattening World: The SoundFrame

Developed by Monitor Audio UK, the SoundFrame has the flat-panel appearance and also looks great on the walls, especially when one selects their preferred colors and prints and uses the photo-frame-like décor. One can also choose a picture of musicians, or some nature elements or even design an entire theme from scratch so that it looks like a personalized painting.  Since the rest of the world is going flat anyway, it seems that our speaker systems must follow suit and stop taking up so much real estate in our living areas.

Measuring a mere 87.5mm, the SoundFrame is very sleek and discreet and can be mounted easily by the TV (even on the wall) and will complement the rest of the flat screen home décor perfectly.  Choose from either landscape or portrait mode and benefit from the SoundFrame’s audio products.

Profiting From Old Gadgets

When gadget-lovers feel the need to replace their technological toys with the latest and newest versions, perhaps their non-gadget lover partners or friends feel that a lot of money has been going to waste.  Well, this need not necessarily be the case anymore.  It seems that iReTron – a website set up by a 15-year-old high school kid – will enable these people to sell their secondary gadgets for some real money.  Indeed, a classic iPod could retail for around $45 and a Blackberry Torch, for $88.

Jason Li from   was perturbed upon learning of the hazards of electronic waste in his world geography class as they want to upgrade the whole time.  He feels that with his website, everyone will gain.  It’s fine that people want to upgrade, but as a way of not causing too much electronic waste, his website will solve it.  By purchasing used electronics, modifying and then reselling them (as other websites already do), consumers have a win-win.

New iPad: No iPad 3

As accurately and poignantly pointed out by Tweeter Kris Sanchez, unlike its predecessor that was named iPad 2, “It's not the iPad 3. It's "The New iPad.”  So understandably, the question on gadget gods and goddesses lips is, what gives this version the edge (if indeed an edge – as opposed to great marketing tactics – it has)?

There has been speculation and commentary, as to why the response – both for and against – has seemingly been so radical.  Ultimately, this iPad doesn’t seem all that different to the iPad 2.  Now, when that version came out, there was understandably a big hullabaloo, since it was so much sleeker than its predecessor.  But surely, if Sanchez is anywhere near the ball – and indeed Phil Schiller (the company’s senior VP of international marketing who used the same terminology) – there has to be something worth getting excited about as there apparently was at the new gadget’s recent launch in San Francisco.

New iPad’s New Features

Let’s look at the new features?  First, there is the retina display which has four times the amount of pixels as its predecessor.  Second, there is a really effective camera that one might actually be excited to use for snapping some good shots.  Third, the HD video recording capacity is impressive.  But still, many have complained that it’s all a lot of noise about nothing.

But while Apple says “demand is off the charts,” an article in Techland was written espousing 6 reasons not to buy the “new iPad.” It dismisses retina display; claims that since it’s not an iPad 3 technically, one shouldn’t make the purchase; for those living out of the 4G LTE umbrella, they will only be getting 3G speeds; it’s bigger and heavier than its predecessor; the camera is only 5 megapixel (not 8); and there is no Siri included.

Still, there must be some reason demand is so high.  Proponents and Apple supporters (who would probably never dismiss an Apple product) argue that the camera is much better on the new iPad than the iPad 2.  But the question others may ask is, is one realistically going to be using such a large machine (so much bigger than a phone or regular camera) to be taking pictures?  Some say, yes they will.  In addition, given that the processor is larger than this iPad’s predecessors, it renders way speedier results.

Ultimately, these might not seem such good reasons not to buy the “new iPad,” but if one cannot find real reasons to buy it (presuming they already have the iPad 2), then it might be worth giving this a miss and saving oneself the $800 price tag.
